Complete Guide to Using Your Medication Reminder

Getting Started

First Time Setup

Step 1: Grant notification permissions when prompted. Medtime needs notification permissions to remind you about your medications.

Step 2: Tap the + button (floating action button) on the main screen to add your first medication.

Step 3: Enter your medication details (name, strength, schedule, etc.) and tap "Save".

Step 4: Ensure the medication is enabled (toggle switch) to receive notifications.

Important Disclaimer: Medtime is a personal tracking and reminder tool only. This app does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult with your healthcare provider regarding your medications and health decisions.

Adding Medications

Medication Information

Required Fields

  • Medication Name: Enter the name of your medication (e.g., "Aspirin", "Metformin")

Optional Fields

  • Strength: The strength per unit (e.g., "100mg", "50mg", "5ml")
  • Form: Select the medication form (Tablet, Capsule, Liquid, Injection, Other)
  • Dosage Amount: How much you take per dose (e.g., "1 tablet", "2 capsules")
  • Category: Classify as Prescription (Script), OTC, or Other

Medication Icon

Choose an icon to visually identify your medication. Available icons include:

  • ๐Ÿ’Š Medication (default)
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Medication Liquid
  • โœจ Healing
  • ๐Ÿฅ Local Pharmacy
You can change the icon, category, and other details later by tapping on the medication card and editing it.

Scheduling & Reminders

Setting Reminder Times

For each medication, you can set multiple reminder times throughout the day:

  1. Tap "Add Time" to add a reminder time
  2. Select the hour and minute using the time picker
  3. Add as many times as needed (e.g., morning, afternoon, evening)
  4. Remove times by tapping the X button next to each time

Schedule Options

Daily Schedule

If you don't select specific days, the medication will be scheduled for every day.

Specific Days of Week

Select specific days (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) if your medication is only taken on certain days.

Skip Weekends

Enable "Skip Weekends" to automatically exclude Saturday and Sunday from your schedule.

Notification Behavior

Dismiss

One-time notification. Once you dismiss it, it won't remind you again for that dose.

Remind Me

The notification repeats until you mark the dose as taken or skipped โ€” and it keeps reminding you even if you never reopen the app. Once the chosen window passes, the reminders stop and the dose is simply recorded as missed (it is never automatically skipped).

The reminder cadence is global โ€” the same for every medication โ€” and is set in Settings โ†’ Defaults โ†’ Remind Me Reminders:

  • Repeat every: 15, 30 or 60 minutes (default 30).
  • Keep reminding me for: 1, 2 or 3 hours past the scheduled time (default 2).

This window only controls how long the reminders keep buzzing โ€” it is not medical advice about how late a dose may be taken. If you are unsure whether you have already taken a dose, do not double up: skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Use "Remind Me" for important medications that you must not forget. Use "Dismiss" for medications where a single reminder is sufficient.

Enabling/Disabling Medications

Each medication has an enable/disable toggle switch. Only enabled medications will send notifications. Disabling a medication is the recommended way to retire one without losing data: its dose history is preserved (and still appears in your Adherence statistics), and it is hidden from the main list to keep your active medications uncluttered.

When one or more medications are disabled, an eye icon (๐Ÿ‘) appears in the top bar and a footer shows how many are hidden. Tap the eye icon to show or hide disabled medications.

Tracking Doses

Marking Doses

When you receive a notification or open the app, you can mark doses in several ways:

Quick Actions on Medication Cards

On the main screen, each medication card shows quick action buttons:

  • โœ“ Taken: Mark the dose as taken
  • โœ— Missed: Mark the dose as missed
  • โŠ˜ Skipped: Mark the dose as skipped (intentionally not taken)

Missed Doses Reminder Screen

If you have missed doses, the app may show a reminder screen when you open it. From there, you can:

  • Mark doses as taken, missed, or skipped
  • Add notes to doses
  • View details about each dose

Adding Notes

When marking a dose, you can add optional notes. This is useful for tracking side effects, symptoms, or other observations.

Dose Status

  • Taken: You took the medication as scheduled
  • Missed: You forgot to take the medication
  • Skipped: You intentionally did not take the medication (e.g., on doctor's advice)
Missed doses are not removed automatically โ€” they stay on record so you can correct them later (for example, mark a dose as taken or skipped) from the Adherence screen.

Adherence Statistics

Viewing Statistics

Tap the calendar icon (๐Ÿ“…) in the top right corner to view your adherence statistics.

Date Range Selection

You can view statistics for different time periods:

  • Last 7 days: Quick view of the past week
  • Last 30 days: Monthly overview
  • Last 90 days: Quarterly view
  • Custom Range: Select any date range using the date picker

Overall Statistics

The adherence screen shows:

  • Overall Adherence Rate: Percentage of taken doses out of those that have come due โ€” that is, taken รท (taken + missed). Skipped doses and doses that are not yet due do not count against your rate.
  • Taken: Number of doses marked as taken
  • Missed: Number of doses marked as missed
  • Skipped: Number of doses marked as skipped
  • Pending: Scheduled doses that are not yet due

The coloured bar gives a visual breakdown of these four outcomes: green (taken), red (missed), orange (skipped), and grey (pending).

Per-Medication Statistics

Expand each medication card to see:

  • Individual adherence rate for that medication
  • Breakdown of taken, missed, skipped, and pending doses
  • Calendar view showing dose status for each day
Use the calendar view to identify patterns. For example, you might notice you miss doses more often on weekends or at specific times of day.

Settings Guide

Access Settings by tapping the โš™๏ธ icon in the top right corner of the main screen.

Notifications

Notification Permission

Check if notification permission is granted. If not, tap "Request Permission" to enable notifications.

Test Notifications

Use the test notification buttons to verify that notifications are working correctly:

  • Test Notification (Immediate): Sends a test notification right away
  • Test Scheduled Notification (10s): Schedules a test notification 10 seconds in the future
  • Check Pending Notifications: View all scheduled notifications

Notification Management

  • Clear All Notifications: Cancels all scheduled notifications (medications and data remain)
  • Reschedule All Notifications: Cancels and reschedules all notifications for enabled medications (useful if notifications are missing)
If notifications stop working, try "Reschedule All Notifications" to refresh them. This is especially useful after app updates or device restarts.

Default Medication Settings

These settings are used as defaults when adding new medications. You can override them for individual medications.

Default Category

Choose the default category (Prescription/Script, OTC, or Other) for new medications.

Default Icon

Select the default icon that will be used for new medications.

Default Notification Behavior

Choose whether new medications should use "Dismiss" or "Remind Me" by default.

Remind Me Reminders

Set the global reminder cadence shared by every "Remind Me" medication: how often to repeat (Repeat every โ€” 15, 30 or 60 minutes, default 30) and how long to keep reminding (Keep reminding me for โ€” 1, 2 or 3 hours past the scheduled time, default 2).

Default Skip Weekends

Enable to automatically skip weekends for new medications by default.

Default Enabled

Enable to have new medications automatically enabled (notifications active) by default.

Data Export

Export your medications and adherence data to CSV format for analysis or sharing with healthcare providers.

The exported CSV includes:

  • All medication details (name, strength, schedule, etc.)
  • All dose records (scheduled time, taken time, status, notes)
Regular exports help you maintain a backup of your data and can be useful for discussions with healthcare providers.

Backup & Restore

Important: Uninstalling the app will delete all your data! Always backup before uninstalling or updating.

Creating a Backup

Step 1: Go to Settings

Step 2: Scroll to "Backup & Restore" section

Step 3: Tap "Backup All Data (JSON)"

Step 4: Choose where to save the backup file (email, cloud storage, etc.)

The backup file includes:

  • All medications and their settings
  • All dose records and adherence data
  • All app settings and preferences

Restoring from Backup

Step 1: Go to Settings โ†’ "Backup & Restore"

Step 2: Tap "Restore from Backup"

Step 3: Confirm that you want to replace all current data

Step 4: Select your backup JSON file

Step 5: Wait for the restore to complete. Notifications will be automatically rescheduled.

Warning: Restoring from backup will replace ALL current data. Make sure you have a recent backup before restoring.
Create regular backups, especially before major app updates or device changes. Store backups in multiple locations (cloud storage, email, etc.) for safety.

Tips & Best Practices

Set Up Defaults First: Configure your default medication settings in Settings before adding medications. This saves time when adding multiple medications.
Use Categories: Organize medications by category (Prescription, OTC, Other) to easily filter and find them on the main screen.
Enable "Remind Me" for Critical Medications: For medications you must not forget, use "Remind Me" behavior. How often the reminders repeat โ€” and for how long โ€” is shared by all medications and is set in Settings โ†’ Defaults โ†’ Remind Me Reminders.
Review Adherence Regularly: Check your adherence statistics weekly to identify patterns and improve your medication routine.
Backup Regularly: Create backups monthly or before any major changes to ensure you don't lose your data.
Use Notes: Add notes when marking doses to track side effects, symptoms, or other observations that might be useful for healthcare discussions.
Keep Notifications Enabled: Ensure notification permissions are granted and medications are enabled to receive timely reminders.
Privacy First: All your medication and adherence data is stored locally on your device. Nothing is transmitted to external servers unless you explicitly export or backup your data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why am I not receiving notifications?
A: Check the following:
  • Notification permission is granted (Settings โ†’ Notifications)
  • The medication is enabled (toggle switch on medication card)
  • Your device's notification settings allow notifications from Medtime
  • Try "Reschedule All Notifications" in Settings if notifications stopped working
Q: Can I edit a medication after creating it?
A: Yes! Tap on any medication card to edit it. You can change the name, schedule, notification behavior, and all other settings. Changes take effect immediately, and notifications will be rescheduled automatically.
Q: What's the difference between "Missed" and "Skipped"?
A: "Missed" means you forgot to take the medication. "Skipped" means you intentionally did not take it (e.g., on doctor's advice, feeling unwell, etc.). Both are tracked separately in your adherence statistics.
Q: Can I delete a medication?
A: Yes. Tap on a medication card to edit it, then tap the delete icon (๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ) in the top right corner. This permanently deletes the medication and all of its dose history, and cannot be undone. If you only want to stop a medication but keep its history, disable it instead (see below).
Q: How do I change how often reminders repeat?
A: The reminder cadence is global โ€” it applies to every medication set to "Remind Me". Go to Settings โ†’ Defaults โ†’ Remind Me Reminders and set "Repeat every" (15/30/60 minutes) and "Keep reminding me for" (1/2/3 hours). Earlier versions had a per-medication interval; this is now a single shared setting.
Q: What happens if I disable a medication?
A: Disabling a medication stops all notifications for it, but the medication and its full dose history remain (and still appear in your Adherence statistics). Disabled medications are hidden from the main list to keep it uncluttered โ€” tap the eye icon (๐Ÿ‘) in the top bar to show them again. You can re-enable a medication anytime by toggling its switch. This is the recommended way to retire a medication without losing data.
Q: Can I use the app offline?
A: Yes! Medtime works completely offline. The only feature that requires internet is viewing the full manual online (which you're reading now). All medication tracking, notifications, and statistics work offline.
Q: How far in advance are notifications scheduled?
A: Notifications are scheduled in a rolling 7-day window. Each time you open the app it automatically extends and reschedules the window, so you always have reminders lined up for the week ahead.
Q: Is my data stored in the cloud?
A: No. All data is stored locally on your device only. Nothing is transmitted to external servers unless you explicitly export your data or create a backup. This ensures your privacy and data security.
Q: What should I do before uninstalling the app?
A: Always create a backup first! Go to Settings โ†’ Backup & Restore โ†’ "Backup All Data (JSON)" and save the file. This way, you can restore all your data if you reinstall the app later.
Q: Can I export my data for my doctor?
A: Yes! Use the "Export to CSV" feature in Settings. This creates a CSV file with all your medications and dose records that you can share with healthcare providers or import into spreadsheet applications.
Q: What if I need to take a medication at a different time than scheduled?
A: You can mark the dose as taken at any time, even if it's before or after the scheduled time. The app tracks when you actually took the medication versus when it was scheduled, which helps with adherence analysis.
